David Gilmour Double Live CD & DVD Due Sept. 15

David Gilmour Live in Gdansk is a double live album plus concert DVD that will be released on September 15, 2008, on EMI Records. David Gilmour Live in Gdansk, the first solo live album from Pink Floyd’s singer/guitarist, captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 in the Gdansk shipyards, the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 On An Island tour. It also features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra.

David Gilmour said of the Gdansk concert:

“This was the first time I have played in Poland and it was a thrill to be there helping to mark one of the most important anniversaries in recent European history. The Gdansk shipyard is a deeply symbolic place and it was an honor to perform our music there. It was particularly exciting to have my friend Zbigniew Preisner there conducting the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra and to be able to perform my album for the first time as it was intended.”

Former President of Poland Lech Walesa and Mayor of Gdansk Pawel Adamowicz invited David Gilmour and his band to perform this very special concert to mark the 26th Anniversary of the founding of trade union Solidarity. The concert, funded by the City of Gdansk and Solidarity, was titled “It Started in Gdansk – The Space of Freedom” and was held on August 26, a National holiday for the Polish people commemorating the founding in 1980 of the Solidarity Trade union. Nine years later it toppled the Communist Government, with its leader Lech Walesa elected President of a democratic Poland.

The double live album David Gilmour Live in Gdansk, produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera, features the Gdansk concert and demonstrates a musician and his band playing at the very peak of their musical brilliance. The six piece band is accompanied for the only time on the On An Island tour by an orchestra: the 40-strong string section of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic conducted by Zbigniew Preisner, orchestral arranger on David Gilmour’s number 1 album, On An Island. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd’s ‘High Hopes’ and ‘A Great Day For Freedom,’ the latter performed here as a one-off for this special Solidarity anniversary.

Playing with Gilmour at this historic concert was his band of world renowned musicians:

Richard Wright – Pink Floyd’s keyboard player
Phil Manzanera – Roxy Music guitarist and co-producer of On An Island
Guy Pratt – bass player with Pink Floyd and Roxy Music
Jon Carin – keyboards and longtime player with Pink Floyd
Steve Di Stanislao – drums, recently played with Crosby and Nash
Dick Parry – saxophone and longtime Pink Floyd collaborator.

The two and a half hour DVD which accompanies the live album is directed by Gavin Elder. The DVD evocatively portrays the drama of the Gdansk concert, set against the urban landscape of the shipyard and crane-filled skyline. Hung above the stage, suspended on two giant cranes, were six, 16 ton screens, each one focused on a band member and lit in a kaleidoscope of color and lasers by lightmeister Marc Brickman. As well as 113 minutes of concert footage, The DVD includes a riveting 36-minute documentary which includes Gilmour’s private meeting with former President Lech Walesa, chats with the band and crew, concert rehearsals and a moving wreath-laying with Walesa at the Memorial to the shipyard workers killed in the 1970 uprising.

David Gilmour Live in Gdansk will be available in several formats, all of which include all the orchestral tracks; the 113-minute ‘Concert DVD’ includes footage of all the orchestral songs, plus ‘Echoes’ and ‘Astronomy Domine.’ ‘Wot’s Uh… The Deal?’ is included only on the vinyl LP set.

DREAM THEATER'S GREATEST HIT (...and 21 other pretty cool songs)

LOS ANGELES - After recently celebrating the band’s 20-year anniversary, Dream Theater returns with its first-ever best-of collection. Spanning 1991-2005, the two-disc set contains rare single edits, B-sides and a trio of new remixes that spotlight that band’s nonpareil musicianship, complex arrangements and amazing songwriting. Dream Theater’s GREATEST HIT (...& 21 other pretty cool songs) will be available from Rhino on April 1 at all physical retail outlets and www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $19.98 and at all digital retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $12.99.

Referring to Dream Theater’s first and only major radio hit, “Pull Me Under,” the compilation’s tongue-in-cheek title is a testament not only to the band’s sense of humor but also highlights the acclaimed New York-based quintet’s ability to make music and cultivate a legion of fans on its own terms, without help from radio or MTV. The collection features more than two hours of progressive hard rock from James LaBrie (vocals), John Myung (bass), John Petrucci (guitar/vocals), Mike Portnoy (drums/vocals) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards).

The collection contains three newly remixed versions of tracks from Dream Theater’s breakout 1992 album, Images And Words: the aforementioned “Pull Me Under” as well as “Take The Time” and “Another Day.” Portnoy says this album presented the perfect opportunity to give the songs a bit of a facelift. “The original mixes always sounded a bit ’80s’ to me, so we had our good friend and longtime mixer Kevin Shirley give the tracks a bit of an update to sound more like the rest of the Dream Theater catalog. The songs remain the same (no pun intended-Kevin just mixed that album as well), but there are little nuances in the tracks that I forgot were originally there, and it’s very cool to hear them again.”

The collection’s 22 songs are split evenly between two discs, which are divided into “The Dark Side” (the metallic) and “The Light Side” (the melodic). Filled with some of the band’s most sinister sounds, the first disc lives up to the billing of “The Dark Side.” Longtime fans will appreciate the abundance of alternative versions of classic tracks, including single edits of “Lie,” “Home,” and “Misunderstood.” Disc One concludes with two tracks from the band’s 2005 album Octavarium: “The Root Of All Evil” and “Sacrificed Sons.”

The second disc, “The Light Side,” spotlights the band’s melodic side and features an alternate mix of “Through Her Eyes,” a single edit of “Solitary Shell” and “To Live Forever,” a 1994 B-side from the U.K.-only single of “Lie.”

A grassroots phenomenon for 20 years, Dream Theater continues to record studio albums acclaimed for award-winning musicianship as well as artistic vision. To meet the demands of a demanding global fan base, the band also maintains an active touring schedule that regularly includes sold-out performances around the world.

Dream Theater has currently been on the road since June 2007, traveling the globe in support of their latest studio album Systematic Chaos. Their world tour will conclude with a final run throughout North America in May as they premiere their “Progressive Nation” package tour with Opeth, Between The Buried And Me, and 3 supporting.

BON JOVI Nearing The End Of Lost Highway

According to Gary Graff Billboard.com, with seven more shows left on its Lost Highway tour, things are starting to get "a little bit" sentimental around the BON JOVI camp, according to guitarist Richie Sambora.

"Each tour is the end of an era and it's an end of a journey," Sambora tells Billboard.com. "The journey starts out with Jon (Bon Jovi) and I sitting in the room with a couple of pieces of paper and a pen and a guitar, and the songs start the whole thing. And it ends up in the studio with the band and then on the promotional tour ... and then the fun part, taking it to the people. So this'll be the end of the 'Lost Highway' era -- and the beginning of a new one, absolutely.”

The group kicks off a short North American swing that starts Sunday in Sarnia, Ontario, and finishes with two shows at New York's Madison Square Garden on July 14-15. As previously reported, Bon Jovi will also play the Major League Baseball All-Star Game concert on July 12 in New York's Central Park.

By the time it wraps the tour will play to an expected 966,000 fans worldwide in support of the 2007 album Lost Highway, which was Bon Jovi's first No. 1 debut on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide, according to Universal.

BLACK SABBATH - Vintage Vinyl In Store Signing Announced

BLACK SABBATH - Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice - will sign copies of their new box set Black Sabbath: The Rules Of Hell* at Vintage Vinyl on Saturday, August 2nd from 3pm-4pm. Vintage Vinyl's address is 51 Lafayette Road - Fords, NJ - ph 732-225-7717. Please contact the store for details.

*Due to time constraints, the band will only sign copies of The Rules Of Hell box set or HEAVEN AND HELL: Live From Radio City Music Hall (DVD/CD).

As previously reported, heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath were reborn in 1980 when founding members Tony Iommi and Terry “Geezer” Butler added vocalist Ronnie James Dio to the lineup. The band’s short but memorable time together added an unforgettable chapter in Sabbath’s storied history. Rhino Records relives the demonic fury conjured by the Dio era with The Rules Of Hell, a boxed set featuring all three of the band’s studio releases (Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer) and their double live collection (Live Evil) - each recently remastered for the first time. The set comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band. This five-disc boxed set will be available on July 22nd at all physical outlets for a suggested list price of $54.98. The set will also be available the same day at all digital outlets for a suggested list price of $24.99.

Dream Theater and The Octavarium Orchestra

Dream Theater concluded its lengthy 20th Anniversary World Tour earlier this year with a triumphant, sold out concert at New York City's famed Radio City Music Hall.

Incubus to Take Extended Time Off

According to Billboard.com, INCUBUS is planning to take a break while its members pursue a variety of endeavors.

On August 23, guitarist Mike Einziger will unveil an orchestral piece in concert at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles.

“He did the Time Lapse Consortium, which was a solo thing, even though most of Incubus played on it. But this one is just Mikey,” frontman Brandon Boyd tells Billboard. “This time, the band will just go to watch. He’s moving into ambitious territory.”

For Einziger, the concert will serve as a precursor to his enrollment in Harvard’s music school to study composition next year. But he’s not the only one returning to higher education, as Boyd also plans to enroll in a university art program.

“And, our drummer is having a baby, so there’s a lot of normal life stuff going on right now — school, babies, mortgages,” Boyd says.

The band does have one more gig on its schedule: the VH1 Rock Honors salute to The Who on July 12 in Los Angeles alongside Pearl Jam, the Foo Fighters, Flaming Lips and Tenacious D. But afterward, Boyd expects Incubus will probably lay low for an extended period of time.

“I’m of the mind to say it wouldn’t be a bad thing to disappear for a year or two years,” he says. “A lot of people would say culture moves too fast and you need to remind people, but I would argue there’s not any rush. Maybe they’ll be a sex scandal or an arrest or something to keep us in the news.”

Cryptopsy vocalist has checked in from the Summer Slaughter tour:

Matt McGachy states: "Summer Slaughter has begun and it is like an extreme metal sleep away camp for the damned. We have simply been having an amazing time out here on the road this past week. The lineup could not be any more solid, all of the bands have been delivering extreme sets night after night. On top of being amazing musicians, all of the bands are very sociable and we are having a great time. I am sure that we will all be leaving as great friends by the end of the tour. The crowds have been extremely responsive and we have witnessed some of the sickest pits since the beginning of 'The Unspoken King' tour. We are very excited to continue our run and are looking forward to seeing what the rest of America has in store."

Coverart revealed for new Dragonforce album

DRAGONFORCE will unleash their new album, Ultra Beatdown, on August 20th in Japan and on August 25th in the rest of the world. The band has just revealed the cover art - pictured left.

The final tracklisting and song length for Ultra Beatdown is as follows: 'Heroes Of Our Time' (7:14), 'The Fire Still Burns' (7:50), 'Reasons To Live' (6:26), 'Heartbreak Armageddon' (7:41), 'The Last Journey Home' (8:12), 'A Flame For Freedom' (5:20), 'Inside The Winter Storm' (8:12), 'The Warrior Inside' (7
:15).

As previously reported, Dragonforce will spend the summer on tour across North America as part of the Mayhem Festival alongside SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED, MACHINE HEAD, AIRBOURNE and many others.

New Lamb of God DVD, "Walk With Me in Hell," Premieres In NYC

On Monday June 30th, 2008 I had the honor of attending Lamb of God's “Walk With Me in Hell” DVD premiere at the Chelsae Theater in New York City. I walked in early and took a seat in the center of the nearly empty theater. The theater had comfortable seats, great sound, and a screen suitable for the room. Seeing the DVD in a theater definitely made it a better experience than sitting at home watching the DVD.

I didn’t know exactly what was going to be shown when I got there since there are two DVDs, a documentary on disc one and their entire performance at the Download Festival and the making of "Sacrament" on the second DVD. The documentary portion of disc one was shown, however. I wasn’t sure what to expect, since I didn’t particularly enjoy their previous DVD’s, (“Killadelphia”) backstage footage. The “Killadelphia” footage didn’t connect scenes well, which made it feel more disjointed and random than something that could hold it’s own. “Killadelphia” focused on their personal lives and hobbies, which was interesting, but something was missing in the flow and organization of the content. I would later find out that “Walk With Me in Hell” was the complete opposite of the things I disliked about “Killadelphia.” The lights eventually went down and after a few unnecessary commercials they came back on.

The band and director came out for a brief introduction about the documentary. They then took their seats in the audience. Drummer Chris Adler sat directly behind me. I thought at first, “Well great, now I am forced to enjoy this.” But it was unnecessary, as the documentary was very well produced and entertaining. The introduction to the movie took a cliché horror movie approach reminiscent of Blair Witch or Cloverfield, but at the same time this differentiated it from other music documentary films. Besides, it was probably done for humor value. The movie really lets you into the life of a touring band and the struggles that occurred during their tours ranging from power outages and broken equipment to playing in front of the wrong audience. “Walk With Me in Hell” also illustrates the band’s personality dynamics through these rough times and the boredom of waiting between shows.

With Chris Adler sitting behind me, I noticed that he covered his face during a part that poked fun at his goal to quit smoking through exercise. Though he seemed embarrassed about it, he was still able to laugh at himself. It was cool that he was still able to also laugh at some of the bizarre disaster stories mentioned in the film as well.

The band seemed to be very resilient and resistant to the stresses of touring, able to brush them off and move on. This form of perseverance is admirable, as many bands drown in it. “Walk With Me in Hell” illustrates that Lamb of God is able to see past the negative side of life and create a fun and positive environment for themselves. The vibe drawn about the band from the movie was that these are normal, fun, chill, silly, and friendly guys just like anyone else in the world, they aren’t gods (well maybe of metal), and certainly don’t think they are. I commend this because many bands that are as big as Lamb of God seem to develop crazy egos and delusions of grandeur.

Having seen other backstage access concert videos and documentaries with and about bands, “Walk With Me in Hell” is truly one of the best. The whole time I felt like I was just hanging out with the band, which gave a realistic idea about their off-stage personalities. After the movie, the band hung around for a few minutes and signed autographs and let fans take pictures. Though the band members seemed busy, they were very welcoming of the fans. It was great to have the opportunity to see an exclusive premiere and to see the band for the people they are outside of performers.
